Study Spots You May Not Know About

If you are like me, there is NO chance I can successfully focus and get my homework done at home. Whether it be roommates, dirty dishes, or a comfortable bed, there always seems to be something that needs my attention more (or something I would rather be doing) than my homework. Because of this reality, I have spent many afternoons studying all across Houston in coffee shops, parks, libraries, and restaurants. Every place has its own distinct vibe, so I have written up a description on a few of my faves, so you can pick the ones that feel right to you!

This section will be about coffee shops. Houston is home to over 100 independently owned coffee shops and roasters. Nothing against studying in a classic Starbucks, but each of these coffee shops bring something special to the Houston community.

1. Eden Plant Co.
This coffee shop doubles as a plant nursery and is incredibly peaceful. Located near campus, it is very convenient to visit between classes for a quiet study hour. There is indoor and outdoor seating all surrounded by lush green plants. The coffee is good and they offer unique flavor options like Lavender Bergamot and Maple Basil. There are a few pastries, but this is not the coffee shop for you if you are looking to grab some lunch, but it is located next door to a pizzeria.

2. Segundo Coffee Lab

Segundo would have to be my favorite Houston coffee spot. If you don’t mind chatter and quiet music, I would highly suggest checking it out. It is located close to campus in Iron Works Market which is an independent business center full of shops, food stalls, tattoo shops, and more. The modern, industrial space screams community and has lots of parking and seating. Although slightly pricier, the shop is owned by a latin american houstonian with a passion for coffee. It has become quite the hub for young professionals and is definitely worth checking out.

3. Campesino

This small shop is tucked away in Montrose, Houston. It is a latino-centric space that serves all traditional menu options. Many coffee options come in traditional clay pots and offer free refills. Although seating and parking are sparse, the cozy, home-like environment is unmatched. This is one of those coffee shops you could spend all day in.

This section will be about spots on-campus. Our space on campus may be in one building, but there is a whole campus developed with the specific needs of students in mind. If you like studying around other students, an on-campus spot might be best for you.

1. Our very own GCSW

Although not a creative answer, I cannot understate the amount of sweet and quiet spots in the GCSW. Whether it’s in the student lounge, the reading room, or the jewel box, there is a vibe for everyone.

2. Cougar Grounds

This on-campus coffee shop has every kind of drink and snack you could want (and they accept ShastaBucks). The space is always alive with students and club meetings.

This section will be about other spots. Houston is a large and diverse city with endless options of places to hang out.

1. The Houston Public Library

Do not underestimate the public library system of Houston. Getting a library card is free and you can access thousands of books, computers, and quiet study spaces. As a transplant to the city, I find going to the library a good way to integrate and connect with the community at large.

2. Hermann Park

Herman Park is located in the center of Houston and has expansive green spaces where people hang out on blankets or in hammocks during the day. Because Houston is so warm, you can continue to study outside well into November. Outside studying is a great change of pace from indoor libraries.

These are by no means all the Houston study spots, and I am always looking for more, but they are a great place to start. Good luck and happy studying!
